On 14 June 2013, GS1 Singapore conducted an off-site training workshop for Sunrise & Co Pte Ltd who has been a GS1 user since 2005. Sunrise & Co Pte Ltd is a local company specializing in regional distribution of sportswear and equipment. The corporate training was conducted at their office premises and was well attended by 13 of their staff members including the Operations Head and Business Development Manager.

Despite being a GS1 user for 8 years, Sunrise & Co Pte Ltd has taken the initiative to arrange for GS1 Singapore to conduct this training session for their new staff as the management believes that it is important for them to be equipped with the knowledge of implementing item numbering and bar codes onto their packaging and the essential steps in ensuring that only quality bar codes reach the market so as to enhance their supply chain management.

Participants were presented with details on the GS1 Global Standards, GS1 Identification Keys and Numbering System. The presentation also covered areas on allocation of the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and technical specifications for retail and non-retail packaging, such as colour, size and location. It was emphasized throughout the training session by Trainer, Joy Lee that both retailers and manufacturers reap the benefits of operational efficiency and faster turnaround of goods if all barcodes are printed with the correct specifications and can be scanned accurately at the first time.

RFID/Retail World Asia 2013

On 25th April 2013, Mr. Johnny Ang, Assistant Director of GS1 Singapore, gave a talk titled ‘Discover the benefits of RFID tagging in inventory management’ at R.F.I.D World Asia 2013, which was held at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Hall.

He gave an overview on what GS1 does, sharing how GS1 has contributed to the Healthcare and Transport and Logistics sectors. He then elaborated on where GS1 helps in the different sectors today. This includes the verification of areas such as food traceability in China, food allergens in Australia and authentication in Hong Kong.

Mr. Ang then went on to introduce two case studies in Japan. The first case study was on inventory management in apparel. He highlighted the problems of high labour and rental costs in manufacturing factories to retail shops and gave a viable solution to these problems. The solution given was to have a GS1 standard and EPC/RFID chip embedded which would effectively reduce labour and cost, as well as to improve on-shelf availability and improve customer service.

The second case study focuses on asset management in fresh food. Mr. Ang addressed the problem of missing trolleys creating extra costs and delays in Kibun Fresh Systems Inc at major distribution centres. The solutions given were to have a GS1 standard and EPC/RFID tag encoded GRAI, which would similarly reduce labour and cost, and improve Quality of Logistics and record purchase information and usage frequency.

Furthermore, to allow participants to have a clearer view on the benefits of RFID in the retail industry, Mr. Ang showed a video featuring a retail outlet in Japan, which has incorporated RFID technology into their retail outlets.

To end off the session, Mr. Ang gave a summary on how global standards adoption helps to boost business confidence and drive growth, reduce costs and drive supply chain efficiencies, enhances traceability and recall of products efficiently, enables interoperability between all stakeholders, drives supply chain visibility and improved transparency. He concluded that collaboration is critical to create more efficient, safer and sustainable value chains.

In addition, Mr. Ang also moderated the ‘Achieving agility and flexibility in your end to end supply chain’ seminar, together with a list of panelists which comprised of Arif Sheikh, CEO, Entertainment World Developers Limited, Williem Van Wky, Group Supply Chain Development Manager, Dairy Farm International Group, and Dheeraj Dogra, National Director-Retail, BNP Paribus Real Estate & Infrastructure Advisory Services Pvt Ltd.

27 March 2013 – The workshop on GS1 Barcode System was a half day event designed for current and new registered users of GS1 Singapore and those who were interested in improving their knowledge and expertise on barcode management and standards. It was attended by 26 Participants comprising of different sectors. 

Mr Johnny Ang, Assistant Director, GS1 Singapore shared with participants the importance and needs of using the GS1 Global Standards, particularly for food traceability and recall. GS1 Registered Users can tap on the wealth of available GS1 technical reference documents and best practices to aid their learning in implementing GS1systems in different industries.

Ms Joy Lee, Senior Executive, GS1 Singapore focused on topics such as basic identification and numbering system of GS1. Emphasis was placed on how poor quality barcode affects business and areas to take note when printing barcodes. The workshop also incorporated interactive discussions and product demo on barcode verification to enhance their understanding of barcode quality issues.

At the end of the workshop, participants had a better understanding on the required knowledge in implementing item numbering and barcodes onto their packaging and the crucial steps in ensuring the standards for barcodes to enter the marketplace Most of the participants had commented that this workshop met their objective to better understand GS1 and the barcoding system.

GS1 Registered Users can tap on the wealth of available GS1 technical reference documents and best practices to aid their learning in implementing GS1systems in different industries.  During the session, case studies and updates the industrial developments of standards around the world were shared. One of the participants mentioned that “(it) Is good to know what is happening globally outside Singapore and have an update of those activities & initiatives.”

Emphasis was placed on how poor quality barcode affects business and areas to take note when printing barcodes. The workshop also incorporated interactive discussions and hands-on exercise for participants to work on case specific scenarios to enhance their understanding of the topics. Examples include assigning/generating different type of barcodes for different uses at work.
